What’s going on today?

Each session is a hand-picked run of the calmest tracks for that moment, with a few tips.

Sleep timer

Fade out, don’t switch off.

Pick a time. In the last minute the music fades to nothing, so the room goes quiet slowly instead of all at once. The timer keeps running as you move around the site.

The calm filter

How we pick cat-friendly tracks

  1. Slow and steady. A relaxed tempo and an even pulse, with no big drops or builds.
  2. Soft dynamics. Small jumps in loudness, so nothing suddenly gets louder.
  3. Few sharp sounds. Fewer sudden attacks and clicks, and a warmer, lower tone.

The honest bit

What the research says

47 cats

Cats noticed cat music more

In a 2015 study, cats oriented towards and approached speakers more, and sooner, when they played music composed for cats than when they played human music.

Snowdon, Teie & Savage, Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 2015

20 cats

Calmer at the vet

During vet exams, cats had lower stress scores while hearing cat-specific music than with classical music or silence. A blood marker of stress didn’t change.

Hampton et al., Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 2020

Our take

Soft music, low volume, a way out

Purrple Cat’s music is lofi made for people, not cat-specific music. We choose its gentlest tracks and suggest a low volume. Treat it as a calm background, not a treatment, and watch your cat.

Questions

Good to know

Does music really calm cats?

Some research says it can help. In a 2015 study, 47 cats paid more attention to music composed for cats than to human music, and a 2020 study of 20 cats at a vet clinic found lower stress scores with cat-specific music than with silence or classical. Every cat is different, so watch yours. Read the full guide for the details.

Is this music made for cats?

No, and we’d rather be honest about it. These are Purrple Cat’s lofi tracks, made for people. We pick the softest, slowest and steadiest of them for cats: few sudden sounds, gentle dynamics and an even pulse.

How loud should I play it?

Quietly. Cats hear much better than we do, so aim for the level of a soft conversation, and give your cat a way to leave the room.

Can I leave it on while I’m at work?

Yes. Start the Home alone session, put it on repeat on a speaker your cat isn’t sitting right next to, and keep the volume low.

Is it free?

Yes. Every track is free to stream and download. Purrple Cat has 500+ songs, licensed CC BY 4.0. You can use them on social media and livestreams with credit, but never upload them to music streaming services.

Can I use it in my cat videos?

Yes, with the credit “Music by Purrple Cat” and a link to purrplecat.com. The music isn’t in Content ID.
